Transplant Opportunities

Our nationally recognized transplant program which has performed Kentucky’s first adult heart, pancreas, heart-lung and liver transplants blazes the way with innovation and research. Our dedicated heart and lung transplant and our abdominal transplant teams support more than 100 transplants annually. Our surgical transplant teams provide exceptional innovative care to our community by supporting the following transplants: heart, lung, pancreas, liver and kidney. We support both deceased donor cases and living kidney donor cases.

Neurosciences Opportunities

Our elite neurosurgery team partners with the UofL Health Brain and Spine Institute team. Our dedicated team supports 5 neurosurgery suites, including a new state of the art neurointerventional suite with biplane angiography. The neuro biplane suite will assist in diagnosis and treatment of stroke, brain and neck tumors, aneurysms and other neurological conditions. Backed by academic research, we offer the most advanced diagnostics procedures to treat the following: brain tumor, aneurysm, stroke, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, spinal stenosis, traumatic brain injury and more.

5 East is a 25-bed neuroscience telemetry unit with integrated Electronic Monitoring Unit (EMU), providing intermediate level care to patients with neurological conditions such as ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, epilepsy with continuous electrode epilepsy monitoring, neurodegenerative diseases, neuromuscular diseases and various other neurological diagnoses.

Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit is a 10-bed ICU providing high level management to patients with life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions. Cases typically seen in this practice area include central nervous system tumors, complex spine surgery, acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, endovascular interventions, neuromuscular diseases, status epilepticus and central nervous system infections.

Our cardiovascular OR (CVOR) includes 5 CVOR suites, including one hybrid CVOR. Our dedicated CVOR team supports thecardiovascular team and heart and lung transplantations. This highly skilled and elite team completes the most complex CV procedures including: ventricular assist device implantation, ablation/MAZE procedures, repair thoracic and thoracoabdominal aneurysms (open and endovascular), AngioVac, atrial myxoma, cardiac bypass, valve replacements, epicardial lead insertion, ECMO insertion/removal, transapical/transfemoral/transilica TAVR, coronary sinus placement, heart and lung transplantation. The surgical team uses research based and cutting-edge procedures to provide exceptional care to patients.
Jewish Hospital received the 2024 Platinum Performance Achievement Award for Chest Pain - MI Registry from the NCDR.

8 Heart & Lung is a 16-bed cardiac surgical progressive care unit, specializing in pre- and post-operative cardiac surgery patients. ICU Towers is a 24-bed Cardiopulmonary Shock-Medical Intensive Care Unit, providing critical care for a variety of diagnoses. Nurses in this unit will have the opportunity to gain experience using advanced equipment such as Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) including Impella Heart Pump.

CVICU/OHRR is a highly skilled, 22-bed Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and Open Heart Recovery. Our patients undergo specialized cardiac, vascular and thoracic procedures including, but not limited to, cardiac bypass, valve replacement and/or repair, ventricular assist devices, heart transplant, lung transplant and aortic aneurysm repair. Our cardiovascular-trained critical care nurses work with mechanical circulatory support devices such as ECMO, ventilators, Impella, IABP, CRRT and pacemakers. The CVICU/OHRR provides life-saving care and is among the most specialized nursing units in the Greater Louisville region.

Cath Lab & EP Lab, Jewish Hospital
The registered nurse for the Cath Lab is a circulator in a procedure room responsible for documentation, monitoring and sedating patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and intervention. The Electrophysiology (EP) Lab RN is responsible for documentation, monitoring and sedating patients undergoing multiple Electrophysiology studies. Highly complex patient population with multi-modal devices, including ECMO, Impella and balloon pump needs in a research-driven environment.
