The medical detox unit at Mary & Elizabeth Hospital offers a variety of behavioral health services and amenities through a medically supervised voluntary detox program. This unit also provides treatment and care for medically compromised patients. 

Services include:

• Inpatient medical detoxification from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines and various other addictive substances in a safe and monitored environment
• Support groups
• After care services and connecting patients with community resources
• Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) meeting available onsite
• Group therapy
• Certified peer support specialists

Emergency Psychiatric Services

Emergency Psychiatric Services is a mental health unit located on the first floor of UofL Health – UofL Hospital. This unit is designed to help adults experiencing psychiatric emergencies. Patients will then meet with the multidisciplinary mental health team, which includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners and social workers to determine the best treatment option.

The patient may be:

• Discharged with an outpatient resource that is appropriate to their needs
• Admitted to Emergency Psychiatric Services 23-hour unit (Holding Bed Unit) for observation
• Admitted to UofL Hospital
• Transferred to another hospital (if transferred to another hospital, your family member will be transported by ambulance)

Acute Crisis Stabilization for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse (3 North)

The academic adult inpatient psychiatry unit is a general hospital setting that is staffed by UofL Physicians – Psychiatry attending physicians and residents. The unit provides psychiatric and medical assessment and management including psychopharmacology and a variety of psychotherapeutic modalities. Consultation with other medical specialties is available. Discharge planning connects patients with community resources and follow-up. Electroconvulsive therapy is available for appropriate patients.

Other therapy options include:

• Holistic and expressive individual and group therapy
• Recreation and art therapy

Patients cannot be referred directly to 3 North. They must be evaluated through Emergency Psychiatric Services first.

• Patients are referred to PeaceNow by a UofL Health provider or a community provider.
• A patient is scheduled for a telehealth assessment by a licensed clinician and then referred to the appropriate level of care within the UofL Health system, or to services outside the system if the most appropriate service is not quickly available.
• Assessments are performed by a clinical psychologist, or a licensed therapist.
• Psychologists and licensed therapists can also provide brief therapy services. No long-term therapy offered.
• Providers will include psychiatric APRNs, supervised by a psychiatrist and Psychiatrists. Clinical services include medication management consideration.

The PeaceNow clinic treats patients aged 12 and above with a range of mental health and substance use concerns including depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, trauma, grief, and other mental health concerns. 

Patients must be referred by a UofL Health provider via the electronic health record system, Epic, or a community provider can fax a referral.

• Email face sheet from Cerner or Epic to Tina Beard (Tina.Beard@UofLHealth.org) and/or Destiny House (Destiny.House@UofLHealth.org)
• Follow-up call to 502-588-4550 to let them know you are referring a patient
• Specify preferred appointment time if possible
• Provide drug test/lab information
• They will provide a scheduled appointment for the patient

In addition, patients can also “Walk In” any Monday or Wednesday from 8 a.m.– 10 a.m. to be seen and drug tested on-site at 401 E. Chestnut St., Suite 610.

Rehabilitation Psychology

The Rehabilitation Psychology Clinic at Frazier Rehab Institute provides consultation- liaison services to the inpatient acute rehab population at this facility.

• Health and behavior assessment and therapy services are short-term, and solution focused to maximize coping/adjustment to injury and illness, promote engagement in positive health behaviors and prevent comorbidities that limit functional
• Health and behavior therapy is individualized to address psychological, cognitive, behavioral, somatic and/or social disturbances associated with the presenting medical diagnosis and may include the following evidence-based interventions:
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy
  • Behavior modification
  • Cognitive behavior therapy
  • Mindfulness-based therapy
• Limited outpatient health and behavior services may be available to support specific outpatient clinics (e.g., spinal cord injury, pain, gastrointestinal, ) to assist patients with coping and adjustment to illness/injury.

Neuropsychology Services

The Neuropsychology Clinic at Frazier Rehab Institute offers comprehensive, individualized neuropsychological assessments of patients with a range of neurological, medical, genetic and other disorders with known or suspected cognitive dysfunction, including but not limited to:

• Traumatic brain injuries
• Neurodegenerative diseases and dementia
• Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders
• Epilepsy and seizure disorders
• Stroke and cerebrovascular disease
• Cancer
• Autoimmune diseases Toxic-metabolic syndromes
• Concussion, including sports-related injuries
• Pre/post-surgical evaluations

Patients are generally referred when there is a question of impairment in cognitive and/or behavioral functioning. Evaluations typically range from three to six hours, depending on the referral question and are aimed to assist in diagnosis, management and/or treatment. Currently, we do not do evaluate for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), developmental disorders or learning disabilities.

NeuroRehab Program

As a component of the comprehensive neurorehabilitation program for acquired brain injury patients, the Frazier NeuroRehab interdisciplinary team includes a psychologist who helps address adjustment to injury, illness and identity, rehabilitation participation and motivation and health behavior change. Patients receiving multidisciplinary (physical, occupational, speech therapies) program care are eligible to be seen by this provider.

Community-based support groups for individuals living with brain injury are held monthly. Support groups for caregivers are held quarterly.

As part of the Trauma-Informed FlourishCare^™ Care Model, behavioral health is offered to individuals, couples and families. Our professional staff of licensed therapists are assisted by a team of more than 50 practicum students from the University of Louisville Schools of Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Clinical Behavioral Health and Nursing, many who act as intern therapists providing free counseling to those that cannot afford a co-pay. Students are all supervised by licensed mental health care providers. Our providers offer therapy only.

The Trauma Survivors Network support group meets from 6–7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month in the Glassroom, which is in the basement of UofL Health – Jackson Street Outpatient Center. Through this group, you will:

• Share experiences and help others
• Feel less alone, anxious and afraid
• Learn new skills for coping with trauma
• Connect to local and national resources
