What is Recreational Therapy?
Recreational therapy is a systematic process that utilizes recreation, leisure and play to address the assessed needs of a patient’s psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being. A recreational therapist uses a wide range of activities, community-based interventions and techniques to improve the physical, cognitive, emotional, social and leisure needs of their patients.
Our therapists work with the patient and their family to incorporate specific interests and goals into therapy to achieve the best outcomes and to increase their quality and participation in life.
Recreational therapy is available throughout the continuum of care at UofL Health – Frazier Rehabilitation Institute, including during inpatient hospitalization, during outpatient services and into community wellness.
Community Reintegration
At Frazier Rehabilitation Institute, our Recreational Therapy program offers outings to support community reintegration. You may see our fully accessible vans out and about around town.
Community outings allow patients to work on their rehabilitation goals in a real-life setting with the support of a therapist and family member/caregiver. These types of outings allow patients to test and improve their mobility skills, help patients learn and re-learn recreation and leisure skills and their increase levels of confidence.
