Home to the Trager Transplant Center, UofL Health – Jewish Hospital is home to the only heart transplant program in the region and has a proud a legacy of over 40 firsts in cardiovascular care.

Our team was responsible for implanting the world's first and second AbioCor Implantable Replacement Hearts. The world's first successful heart transplant following the use of a thoracic ventricular assist device also took place at the center. In addition, our surgical teams were the first in Kentucky to perform heart transplant and implantation of the HeartMate II ventricular assist device. We were also the first in the state to offer transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In 2009 we conducted the world’s first trial of cardiac stem cells for chronic heart failure and in 2021 we were the first in the world to implant Aeson bioprosthetic total artificial heart in a female patient.

Our team is made up of nationally renowned cardiothoracic surgeons and cardiologists, all performing the full spectrum of invasive, non-invasive and surgical procedures. Using the most sophisticated equipment and techniques to diagnose, manage and treat heart and vascular disease, this collaborative team is among the most highly touted in the region.
