UofL Health – UofL Hospital is a comprehensive health care facility in downtown Louisville, the primary teaching hospital for the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The only Level I Trauma Center in the Louisville area, UofL Hospital provides advanced care for critical and emergency. The hospital is a leader in specialized treatments and cutting-edge technology, supporting a wide range of medical services to improve community health. The hospital uses systems like the Globus ExcelsiusGPS and the da Vinci, to improve minimally invasive procedures that prioritize accuracy and patient safety.
da Vinci
The da Vinci System is a robotic-assisted technology system used for surgical purposes. When non-surgical treatments are either unavailable or cannot relieve symptoms, surgery is often the recommended treatment for many conditions, including various types of cancer. The da Vinci System places a camera at the site of cancer or the area of the body where the surgeon is operating, providing exceptional vision, precision, dexterity and improved access to the treatment site. With minimally invasive surgeries using tools such as the da Vinci System, patients experience less pain, less risk of complications and can return to their normal lives quicker.
Our surgeons were the first in Kentucky to use the da Vinci system for colorectal and head and neck conditions. Over 10,000 surgical procedures have been performed using the da Vinci system at UofL Hospital, earning the certification of Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. Today, it is used by a variety of specialists for conditions including:
- Colon and Rectal Surgery – pelvic dissection
- Ear, Nose and Throat – tumor resection
- General Surgery – hernia repair, gallbladder surgery, surgical management of heartburn (GERD) and swallowing difficulties
- Gynecologic Oncology – treatment of gynecologic cancers (endometrial, cervical, uterine, ovarian, vaginal, vulvar) and treatment of benign gynecologic conditions (dysplasia, cysts, fibroids, endometriosis)
- Surgical Oncology – complex cancer surgery of the upper GI and liver, pancreas and biliary system including pancreatectomy, splenectomy, esophago-gastrectomy, radical gastrectomy and liver resections
- Urology – prostatectomy, patrial nephrectomy, complex nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, ureteral reconstruction, urinary diversions such as neobladder and Indiana pouch, vesicovaginal fistula repair and sacrocolpopexy
- Urogynecology – reconstruction of the vagina for prolapse (sacrocolpopexy) and hysterectomy
Globus ExcelsiusGPS
UofL Health – UofL Hospital offers the Globus ExcelsiusGPS system, a minimally invasive robotic-arm assisted technology. This revolutionary technology combines navigation and robotics, using its robotic arm to carefully place tools and implants along a pathway to assist surgeons. The instruments and implants are displayed on a screen, providing the surgeon with real-time feedback throughout the surgery.
