LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One year ago, Duewy Scobee faced one of the biggest challenges of his life—a heart transplant at UofL Health – Trager Transplant Center. Now, he returned to celebrate his second chance at life with the team that made it possible.
A talented cake decorator, Duewy made a special dessert featuring a gloved hand holding a heart—a heartfelt tribute to the incredible transplant team that saved his life. The road to transplant came with many emotions and big decisions, but with the support of his family and the dedicated team of surgeons, doctors, transplant coordinators, social workers and cardiac rehab specialists, Duewy found the strength to move forward.
“It’s all right when they tell you you’re going to get a heart. It’s different when they come in and say, ‘It’s here, you’re going to go get prepped to do the transplant,'” Duewy said. “This [could be] the last day that you have. If something doesn’t go right, that’s it.”
Now, one year later, Duewy is not just celebrating—he’s thriving! Duewy recently completed a 5K run with his wife and has more races in his future.
“He brings a lot of positive energy to every interaction.” said Rohan Samson, M.D., a cardiologist at UofL Health – Heart Hospital. “It all makes it worthwhile for us.”
Join us in congratulating Duewy on his amazing journey!
