LOUISVILLE, KY. – UofL Health – Frazier Rehabilitation Institute’s outpatient pediatric program is expanding in Southwest Louisville thanks to a grant from Kosair for Kids. Operating on the UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital campus since 2016, this new space will accommodate more kids and more staff with innovative new equipment and technologies for physical, occupational and speech therapy for children from infancy through adolescence. The expansion is made possible by a $500,000 grant from Kosair for Kids.
“Kosair for Kids and UofL Health have such similar missions, focused on breaking down barriers and increasing access to care,” said Tom Miller, UofL Health CEO. “I extend our gratitude to the Kosair for Kids leadership, and we look forward to helping these kids heal so they can get back to playing, learning and living.”
The expansion will more than double the space dedicated to pediatric rehab and offer support for many diagnoses, including autism, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, scoliosis, Down syndrome, torticollis, dysphagia and multi-traumas after motor vehicle accidents.
“Kosair for Kids is proud to be the catalyst for this expansion to provide more access to therapy for the children of Southwest Louisville,” said Barry Dunn, Kosair for Kids President and CEO. “Through this collaboration with UofL Health, we reaffirm the commitment we made more than a century ago to be there for all children in their time of need.”
Autistic children also will benefit from a Snoezelen® room, a multi-sensory environment to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety, and a new-to-the-area technology, Bioness®, will support electrical muscle stimulation for young patients diagnosed with cerebral palsy or brain injury.
“Injury and illness can have such a unique impact on children, and we are thankful to have Kosair for Kids as a partner,” said Dan Hudson, Frazier Rehab Institute CEO. “The Kosair for Kids Pediatric Center will expand access to the expertise needed to address our young patient’s physical, emotional and developmental needs.”
In 2023, Frazier Rehab’s outpatient network served more than 500 pediatric patients (28% were five or younger). More than half of those came to the Mary & Elizabeth Hospital campus for their care.
“The expansion of Frazier Rehab’s pediatric program compliments our ongoing investments to expand care to all our neighbors,” said Melisa Adkins, Mary & Elizabeth Hospital CEO. “This, along with our birthing center opening in the spring, means we can take care of you from newborn, through adolescence, into adulthood and your senior years.”
Construction of the new site is expected to be complete by Spring 2025.
