SHELBYVILLE, Ky. – UofL Health – Shelbyville Hospital has received an “A” on the Spring 2025 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, an evaluation of nearly 3,000 hospitals on their ability to prevent medical errors, accidents and infections.
This accomplishment places Shelbyville Hospital among the top 12% of hospitals nationwide and 12% in Kentucky to consistently achieve an “A” grade. The local hospital also received an “A” grade in Fall 2024.
“Our team continues to show up big for our patients and community every day,” said Aaron Garofola, Shelbyville Hospital CEO. “I couldn’t be more honored to get the opportunity to serve and support them while they achieve such amazing results!”
The Hospital Safety Grade assigns an “A,” B,” “C,” D” or “F” based on data submitted by individual hospitals. Calculations for ratings are made by leaders in patient safety and are used to observe national trends. Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade’s biannual ratings are free and transparent for use by the public.
Shelbyville Hospital’s exceptional scores are the result of significant success in preventing infections and utilizing best practices to prevent errors.
“Earning an ‘A’ grade and the consistent excellence is a direct reflection of the work our clinical team does every day to prevent medical errors, accidents and infections at Shelbyville Hospital,” said Annessa Baker, Shelbyville Hospital Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer. “We are all extremely proud of this significant achievement.”
The community hospital has had a focused effort over the last five years to cultivate a culture of excellence, continually improve quality of care and to keep patients safe. The collaborative work of its entire team has yielded a number of recognitions, including achieving over 1,000 days without a Serious Safety Event, zero incidences of Patient Safety Indicator failures, a sixth “Best Places to Work in Kentucky” recognition and induction into the Best Places Hall of Fame—an honor only one of two hospitals in Kentucky have obtained in the program’s 20-year existence. The hospital also received its third consecutive Sentinel News Reader’s Choice “Best Employer in Shelby County.”
