LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UofL Health – UofL Hospital has recently achieved re-designation as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery—recognized for providing the highest quality of care and patient safety by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC)—and has now reached a milestone of 10,000 daVinci® robotic surgery cases.
“Reaching 10,000 robotic surgery cases is a testament of the expertise our surgeons offer at UofL Hospital,” said Ken Marshall, COO of UofL Hospital. “It takes an elite robotics team with experience and dedication to achieve this milestone and receive this re-accreditation.”
UofL Hospital has three daVinci® Xi robots, and our surgeons were the first in Kentucky to utilize this technology.
“The high volume of cases and the advanced robotics surgical team allows our providers to develop their surgical techniques and teach them to future surgeons,” Marshall said. “More importantly, it speaks to our surgeons’ expertise in their respective fields.”
More than 5,000 of the cases have been for gynecologic robotic surgery.
“Robotic surgery helps our hospital offer patients the most advanced technology and because this is minimally invasive, it leads to shorter hospital stays, quicker recovery and minimal scarring for patients,” said Daniel Metzinger, M.D., director of robotic surgery at UofL Hospital and a gynecologic oncologist with UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center. “This is safer for our patients and allows them to get back to normal much quicker compared to an open procedure.”
The robot is used for a variety of diagnoses and is used by multiple specialties, including gynecologic oncology, surgical oncology, urogynecology, colon and rectal surgery, general surgery, otolaryngology, and urology. To learn more, visit our Robotic Surgery page.
