UofL Health – Cardiopulmonary and Cardiac Rehab provide hands-on, medically-supervised exercise in state-of-the-art facilities. We use a broad range of exercise, nutrition and stress management techniques to promote well-being in body, mind and spirit.

The ability to work closely with health care providers is part of what makes us different. Unlike other exercise and weight management programs, the Cardiopulmonary and Cardiac Rehab programs are grounded in evidence-based medicine and backed by UofL Health. Our team works under the supervision of physicians and includes registered nurses, exercise physiologists, registered dietitians, respiratory therapists, monitor technicians and licensed clinical social workers. They serve as health coaches, identifying services that can benefit individuals most — an approach that is truly holistic.

Our cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs help you restore and maintain optimal heart and lung health while helping to reduce the risk of future problems. Some of the benefits you can expect upon completing our rehab program include:

  • Improved fitness levels
  • Reduction of symptoms
  • Smoking cessation
  • Maintenance of a healthy weight
  • Reduction of cholesterol levels and blood pressure
  • Lower levels of anxiety and depression
  • Better control of diabetes
  • Improved communication with your physician and other health care providers about your progress

Treatments and Services

Our services begin with a clinical assessment of personal health and risk factors. From there, treatment programs are designed to fit an individual’s specific needs that can include:

  • Fitness training with treadmills, elliptical trainers, recumbent bicycles and free weights.
  • Educational classes address an array of risk factors to ensure individuals have the information, support and resources needed for optimal recovery
  • One-on-one consultation with a registered dietitian to evaluate and modify diet
  • One-on-one consultation with a licensed clinical social worker to develop a plan to accomplish goals
  • Supervised exercise therapy for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) to help improve circulation and available metabolites

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program and Qualifying Conditions

Cardiac Rehab is a lifesaver as it reduces the chances of a fatal heart attack by 20-30 percent. It can help lessen the effects of heart disease while improving your stamina and ability to return to your usual activities.

This advanced program offers educational classes, dietary consultations and stress management guidance, in addition to the fitness training and monitoring found in traditional cardiac rehab. Our cardiac rehab may be covered by Medicare/Medicaid and commercial insurance for the following conditions:

  • Bypass surgery
  • Stent/Angioplasty
  • Valve surgery
  • Heart transplant
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure (EF< 35%)
  • Stable angina

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program and Qualifying Conditions

Pulmonary rehab is designed for individuals with breathing difficulties. The program is designed to teach people with breathing problems how to decrease their shortness of breath with most activities.

Pulmonary rehab focuses on the individual by helping them improve their endurance levels through monitored exercise. The program gives individuals a better understanding of their condition and teaches them to manage it on a daily basis through energy conservation, breathing techniques, diet and stress management. Pulmonary rehab also helps individuals regain self-confidence. Patients may notice they are stronger, and see a decrease in symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath.

Individuals that require oxygen will be supplied oxygen during exercise. Medicare/Medicaid and commercial insurance may cover pulmonary rehab for these conditions:

  • COPD
  • Emphysema
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Lung cancer and lung cancer surgery
  • Lung volume reduction surgery
  • Lung transplant
  • Respiratory Failure
  • Interstitial Lung Disease
  • COVID-19
