Depression in Women

There are many things that are different between men and women, and one statistic that is rapidly increasing is that women are more likely to be depressed than men. Studies indicate that women are commonly three times more likely to be depressed.

There are lots of different reasons why depression is more common in women than men. Some gender-specific reasons include fluctuating hormone levels, menopause, pregnancy and labor, menstruation and birth control. These are all things that affect women but do not affect men.

There is also a difference in common emotional symptoms between men and women. For example, women who are depressed are more likely to feel guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness, reduced pleasure and mood swings. While men are usually a bit more aggressive with anger, irritability and restlessness.

If you are struggling with depression, there are some things you can add to your daily routine to make yourself feel better. It is important to try and follow these steps because they will help you feel more like yourself.

Have a Schedule Every Day

Developing routines go a long way with helping work through depression. If you work, build a wake-up routine and make time for yourself to have lunch or a break during the work day. In the evening, have a schedule of what chores or responsibilities need to be completed before you go to bed. If you do not work, try to build a schedule around the responsibilities you have at home. Another option is to volunteer. There are may different organizations looking for different levels of help. Volunteering your time is a great way to meet new people and gives you the satisfaction of helping others and a sense of accomplishment.

Get a Good Night of Rest

Getting a good night of rest is incredibly important, but, if you find yourself depressed, you want to make sure you are going to bed at a reasonable time and waking up at a good time. Close to 15% of those who experience depression report oversleeping as one of their symptoms. Oversleeping raises the risk of anxiety and depression.

Make a To-Do List

Every morning when you wake up, try and make a to-do list. This will help add structure to your day and help you know what needs to be accomplished. This will also help you be more motivated and feel some accomplishment once you begin to check things off it. Making a to-do list helps put all your tasks into perspective of what you need to get done so you are not as overwhelmed by your responsibilities.
