The Kentucky Derby is “the most exciting two minutes in sports”, but it’s also one of the greatest days in fashion.
Women and men generally spend months planning the perfect outfit, complete with hats, fascinators and bowties. Due to the pandemic, things are a little different.
While crowd size is still reduced, there is also another accessory to add to your shopping list – a facemask.
People are coming up with unique ways to dress up their face coverings, including sequins, fringe and fun patterns. Just make sure your fancy mask is still protecting you.
Here are a few things to think about as you select your perfect Derby mask.
- Layers are important. Make sure your mask has at least two layers of tightly woven fabric. A thin layer of lace might look pretty, but it won’t give you as much protection as a thicker material.
- Just like your clothing, fit matters. You want your mask to fit snugly over your mouth and nose. It should be tight enough that you don’t have to keep touching it, but comfortable enough that it’s not hard to breathe.
- Bring a backup. If you spill food or liquid on your mask, you’ll probably want to change. Make sure you have a suitable backup so you’re not walking around with a dirty, uncomfortable mask all day.
- Check the quality. If you plan on wearing your mask after Derby, make sure it’s made from fabric that will keep its shape after cleaning.
