An academic medical center/system is a fully operated medical center integrated with a medical school or university and serves as a principal site for teaching residents, fellows, and students. An academic medical center’s education, research, and clinical care are combined to provide clinical care that uses cutting-edge technologies, resources and therapies other community hospitals may not have available.

UofL Health is affiliated with the University of Louisville. This allows students from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and others to work and learn in our hospitals, medical centers, and physician offices, just as they would in other academic settings. This provides them with the exciting opportunity to participate in patient care, research, and clinical trials to further advance innovative patient care. This integration also allows for in-house technological and treatment advancements that can benefit patients worldwide, changing the delivery of health care everywhere. To become an academic medical center, UofL Health, has gone through an extensive accreditation process consisting of a commission periodically coming to the facility to ensure that all requirements are met and pass inspection.

As an academic medical system, patients at UofL Health have the opportunity to volunteer for clinical trials. These trials are key in transforming and advancing the future of care and treatments available to patients.

This means UofL Health can provide our patients with the highest level of care possible. UofL Health care teams consist of physicians, nurses, researchers, and teachers who all work cohesively to develop the next generation of health care professionals and advanced treatments for patient care.
