Cancer & Blood Specialists of Louisville has joined UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center, combining a 40-year legacy of community-based cancer care in south Louisville with nationally recognized multidisciplinary care, advanced research and innovation. The new Brown Cancer Center location, at 1460 Bluegrass Avenue, is an affiliate of UofL Health – Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. It is the cancer center’s second expansion this year and its third location in Louisville.
“The Brown Cancer Center, and UofL Health, are committed to decreasing barriers and increasing access. As we bring cancer care closer to home, we are improving early diagnosis and options for treatment,” said Jason Chesney, M.D., Ph.D., UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center director and chief administrative officer. “South Louisville has benefited from Drs. Vijay Raghavan and Mohammad Khan, and the compassion and expertise on their team. All are outstanding additions to our Brown Cancer Center multidisciplinary program.”
Situated just east of the Mary & Elizabeth Hospital campus, the newest Brown Cancer Center location will offer CT scans, PET scans and infusion therapy. Radiation therapy will be supported within the hospital. Patients will also have access to clinical trials, immunotherapy and new treatments before they are available anywhere else.
“The Brown Cancer Center is the leading academic center in the region, and our patients will benefit from its comprehensive academic expertise,” said Vijay Raghavan, M.D., hematologist/oncologist with UofL Health – UofL Physicians. “As part of the cancer center, our patients will now have access to more subspecialist providers. It means more providers collaborating to recommend the best treatment plan for you.”
The Brown Cancer Center’s multidisciplinary teams leverage the expertise of multiple physicians and clinicians, and may also include pharmacy, nutrition, social services and more. The team meets weekly to review new cases and develop treatment plans that are customized, comprehensive and coordinated specially for each patient.
“Multidisciplinary care is at the core of the Brown Cancer Center, and now it’s more accessible than ever,” said Mohammad Khan, M.D., Ph.D., hematologist/oncologist with UofL Physicians. “Our location is not changing, but as part of the Brown Cancer Center, our patients have increased options for clinical trials, the latest research and innovative treatments.”
The south Louisville location is well positioned to make a difference in an area particularly in need of more cancer care. The neighborhoods surrounding it are among those with the most cancer deaths in Jefferson County, according to the Louisville Metro Health Equity Report (2017).
“Bringing the Brown Cancer Center to south Louisville is another UofL Health milestone to improve health care in medically underserved areas,” said Melisa Adkins, chief administrative officer at Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. “In addition to the benefit of academic cancer care, we have added more primary care, urgent care and 24/7 STEMI care for heart attacks to better serve the area.”
With the addition of the Brown Cancer Center’s newest location, UofL Health has brough academic cancer care to the following communities:
