From the time a patient receives a prescription for a medication from their provider to the time they return for a follow-up visit, many things can happen that cause a poor outcome. For patients with chronic or complex diseases, this can be even more challenging—from experiencing negative side effects to having financial challenges in paying for their medication.
To fill this gap, University of Louisville Hospital opened the UofL Hospital Specialty Pharmacy. Specialty pharmacy services support patients with chronic and complex diseases throughout the entirety of their drug therapy, from helping patients and providers achieve the desired outcome for the patient while managing side effects and seeking co-pay support.
Specialty pharmacy is different than traditional pharmacies in that patients are individually guided through their medication journey to ensure effective, safe and timely administration. The goal is to facilitate medication access for specialty medications and work as a financial advocate for the patient.
The UofL Hospital Specialty Pharmacy care team is made up of clinical pharmacists, benefit coordinators, technicians and patient care coordinators specially trained in patients’ conditions. The team thoroughly educates patients on all medications, including administration techniques, side effects and drug interactions.
