Mary Skinner, MSN, DNP, AGNP-C
Mary Skinner, MSN, DNP, AGNP-C, graduated from University of Louisville with her bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) in 2001. Caring for older adults was a passion she found while working as a registered nurse (RN) in long-term care (LTC) and long-term acute care (LTAC) settings. She returned to University of Louisville to obtain her MSN in geriatrics and was certified as a nurse practitioner (NP) in 2008. Mary has spent the past 15 years working in long-term care, subacute rehabilitation, house calls and geriatric chronic disease management in primary care. She pursued her DNP at University of Kentucky in 2015 to educate NP students on caring for older adults and navigating the unique environment in nursing homes. Mary’s experience in LTC and subacute rehabilitation includes acute and chronic disease management, palliative and hospice care, and quality improvement measures such as reducing polypharmacy, improving antibiotic stewardship and collaborating with the psychiatric team to reduce antipsychotic use. She is certified as a dementia care specialist through University of California, Los Angeles’s Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program and received honors in teaching from students including “Student Champion” and “Faculty Favorite.” Topics and courses Mary has taught include: Evidence Based Practice, the 4 M’s of Geriatric Care, the role of NPs in LTC to Medical Residents and Fellows, and polypharmacy with a focus on the Beer’s Criteria for inappropriate prescribing in the geriatric population.Education & Training
