It’s a new day in health care for Louisville and the Kentuckiana region as UofL Hospital and UofL Brown Cancer Center’s daily management transitions to University Medical Center (UMC) and away from KentuckyOne Health. The new management structure allows the organization’s world-class nurses and staff, partnered with the physicians and providers with UofL Physicians to deliver an expanded level of extraordinary health care to patients and their families.

More than 2,500 employees and physicians are now team members at UMC. In addition, a new infrastructure for Quality, IT, Human Resources, Marketing, Compliance, Finance, Contracting, Credentialing and more has been under development since the transition was announced in January 2017. Employees, physicians and patients share new enthusiasm and optimism for the opportunities that surround the transition to UMC.

The clinical programs and services currently provided at UofL Hospital, UofL Brown Cancer Center and the Center for Women & Infants will have an ongoing focus on enhanced medical technology, professional engagement and improved quality outcomes.

UofL Hospital will continue to be the flagship adult hospital for the University of Louisville’s School of Medicine, providing clinical training for residents, medical students, nurses and other professional medical providers. Additionally, UofL Hospital serves as the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region and will continue to be the level 3 NICU for babies born in the Center for Women & Infants that need extra care.

“Today truly is a new day for our employees, physicians and patients as we move forward to bring a renewed focus on UofL Hospital and UofL Brown Cancer Center as the only academic medical center in our community,” Ken Marshall, president and CEO of UofL Hospital, said. “We have spent countless hours and resources to make the transition seamless for our employees and patients.”

“The physicians are committed to making UofL Hospital and UofL Brown Cancer Center the leader in patient-centered care,” Jason Smith, M.D., chief medical officer of UofL Hospital, said. “Partnering with our nurses and staff, and with the support of the UofL School of Medicine and UofL Physicians, we believe that as the only academic medical center in the region, we have the opportunity to expand and enhance the extraordinary care that we deliver to our patients.”

The transition occurred on July 1, 2017.
