LOUISVILLE, Ky.– UofL Health – Medical Center East is now offering Persona IQ®, the world’s first and only smart knee implant granted De Novo status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for total knee replacement surgery. The smart knee implant surgery is the first to be performed in the Louisville market as well. Persona IQ combines the proven and trusted knee implant, Persona® The Personalized Knee®, with implantable sensor technology that measures range of motion, step count, walking speed and other gait metrics.
“We’re excited to offer Persona IQ, the world’s first smart knee implant, to our patients considering knee replacement surgery. This new-to-world innovation will provide surgeons access to objective kinematic data directly from the implant post-surgery,” said James Baker, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at UofL Health.
Persona IQ features implantable sensor technology that records and wirelessly transmits a wide range of gait data from the knee implant to a patient’s personal base station at home. The data is then securely delivered to a HIPAA-compliant cloud-based platform and can be accessed by the patient and their surgeon. Persona IQ will work together with mymobility®, a remote care management platform that tracks pre- and post-operative mobility metrics.
“The continued innovation in medical technology like this brings hope that the ‘impossible’ is always possible here at UofL Health,” said Angelica Thompson, BSN, RN, vice president of operations for ambulatory services at UofL Health. “And we are determined to give patients the confidence that we will follow them through their recovery journey every step of the way.”
Medical Center East has provided leading-edge technology for nearly 20 years, with the ability to care for surgical patients for 23 hours post-procedure and home to more than 20 primary care and specialty physician offices.
