Metabolic bone diseases affect your bone strength. Factors such as genetic conditions and vitamin deficiencies can lead to mineral imbalances that cause weakened bones.
The most common of these is osteoporosis, a loss of bone mass that leads to bone weakness and a higher risk for fractures. This affects approximately 12.6% of Americans aged 50 and older.
Other metabolic bone diseases that are less common include:
- Osteopenia
- Cushing syndrome
- Hypophosphatasia
- Osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease)
- Osteomalacia (called rickets in children)
- Paget’s disease
