Since 1964, our kidney transplant program at UofL Health – Trager Transplant Center has delivered exceptional care and lasting results. As pioneers in the field, we completed Kentucky’s first non-related living kidney-donor transplant and continue to lead with advanced options for complex cases. Our team specializes in using Hepatitis A, B and C positive organs, transplanting in HIV-positive recipients and supporting patients who prefer a bloodless surgery approach.
Reasons for a Kidney Transplant
The primary need for a kidney transplant stems from kidney failure. Kidneys tend to fail because of high blood pressure or diabetes. When kidneys fail, the result is end-stage renal disease, a permanent condition in which normal kidney function will not return.
When a kidney has permanently lost the ability to clean the blood of toxins, the process is done by artificial means called dialysis. Learn more about dialysis. You may stay on dialysis until a kidney becomes available for transplantation.
Kidney-Pancreas Transplant
At Trager Transplant Center, our team of experts are highly skilled and trained in multi-organ transplantation. Not only will you have support from our transplant surgeons, but you’ll also have access to our endocrinologists and nephrologists who partner with our comprehensive transplant team to bring you the personalized care you deserve.
If you have questions about a pancreas transplant, please call 502-587-4358.
Kidney Transplant Candidate Eligibility
You could qualify for a kidney transplant if you meet the following criteria:
- Have end-stage renal disease or chronic kidney failure
- On dialysis
If you think you could qualify for a kidney transplant, talk to your health care provider or fill out this referral form.
Living Kidney Donation
You have the power to change someone’s life. Living kidney donation is the best option for someone facing a kidney transplant. This donor can be a friend, relative or an anonymous donor.
Some benefits of living kidney donation are:
- The organ lasts longer than one from a deceased donor
- Shorter wait time for a new organ
- Donors don’t pay out-of-pocket for evaluation, surgery or follow-up care
- Should a donor need a kidney transplant later on, the donor will receive priority on the waiting list
At Trager Transplant Center, we make the process as easy and safe as possible. Our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques, which result in shorter hospital stays and a quicker recovery time. Following a full recovery from surgery, donors can walk, drive, exercise and play non-contact sports.
