UofL Health – Jewish Hospital opened in 1905 with a mission to provide all patients with the highest quality care and a strong emphasis on research and education. Today, Jewish Hospital, is a 462-bed an internationally renowned, high-tech tertiary referral center focused on developing leading-edge advancements in hand and microsurgery, heart and lung care, orthopedics and sports medicine, brain and spine care, organ transplantation and outpatient care. Many of the hospital’s clinical programs have achieved national rankings for excellence. Noted for numerous medical firsts in Kentucky, the nation and the world, Jewish Hospital is the site of the nation's first four hand transplants, first kidney transplant in 1964, the first heart transplant in 1984 and the first hand transplant in 1999.

Being an academic medical center creates an environment where education, clinical expertise and research collide to save lives in innovative ways. In fact, the world's first and second successful AbioCor™ Implantable Replacement Heart transplant, and more recently, the nation's second and third CARMAT Aeson® total artificial heart transplants - one of which was the world's first successful transplant ever performed in a female patient - have all been performed at Jewish Hospital. In addition, the first trial of adult cardiac stem cells in chronic heart failure happened here too.

Jewish Hospital continues to be recognized for specialized heart care procedures, including the implantation of ventricular assist devices (VAD), and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Part of a regional network of EMS providers, Jewish Hospital is an chest pain center providing comprehensive 24/7 STEMI heart attack care and treatments. Jewish Hospital is the first hospital in Kentucky to receive the Chest Pain Center Primary PCI and Resuscitation Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), an Institute of the American College of Cardiology.

UofL Health – Trager Transplant Center, a part of Jewish Hospital,  is among a select group of hospitals nationwide approved by Medicare  to perform heart, lung, liver, kidney, living donor kidney, and pancreas transplants.  The center also includes a Pancreas Disease Center, a GI Motility Clinic, and Advanced Heart Failure Therapies programs.
