LOUISVILLE, Ky.– UofL Health – Medical Center Northeast now offers mammography breast cancer screenings as a continuation of our health system’s efforts to expand preventative examinations. The increased access to advanced breast cancer screenings technology can improve the ability to catch cancer early and better treat patients across Louisville and the region.

“The dedication from this organization to give our patients state of the art care never seizes to impress me,” said John Walsh, CEO of UofL Health – Jewish Hospital. “This investment in 3D mammography at Medical Center Northeast represents our commitment to ensuring that the highest quality care is available to our patients in their own community, and adds to the already offered services through UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center multidisciplinary clinics.”

Patients who schedule mammography appointments at Medical Center Northeast will experience Genius™ 3D Mammography™ exams. Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, Genius exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, and also decreasing the number of women asked to return for additional testing.1-7

The mammography upgrade is part of a $710-thousand-dollar investment in breast health for several UofL Health facilities.

“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime,” Dr. Ian Morley, director of breast imaging for UofL Health and part of the multidisciplinary breast team at Brown Cancer Center, said. “It’s important for women 40 and older to be screened annually for breast cancer through mammography. The combination of 3D mammography and our team of breast-trained radiologists ensures patients in this community have access to high quality breast cancer screening and diagnostics.”

Medical Center Northeast’s four-story, 120,000 square-foot outpatient care facility started scheduling patients for mammograms at the beginning of March as part of the commitment to better serve residents of Middletown, Jeffersontown, Anchorage and Eastwood areas of Jefferson County. It is now the seventh location where breast cancer screening is available within the UofL Health system.

“Adding mammography at Medical Center Northeast is another step toward this location becoming a comprehensive cancer center,” Dr. Beth Riley, a breast medical oncologist and deputy director of health affairs for Brown Cancer Center. UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center, which has three Louisville area locations, plans to add radiation therapy at Medical Center Northeast later this fall. “By offering a convenient location for patients who live in this community, we hope more breast cancers will be caught early when they are most treatable. If diagnosed, patients will have access to nationally-recognized, comprehensive treatment from the multidisciplinary breast care team from Brown Cancer Center right here at Medical Center Northeast.”

UofL Health – Medical Center Northeast’s Genius 3D Mammography is also equipped with SmartCurve™, which provides improved comfort without compromising image quality. The SmartCurve system features a proprietary curved surface that mirrors the shape of a woman’s breast to reduce pinching and allow better distribution of force over the entire breast.
