UofL Health – South Hospital – Emergency Department (ED) is a full-service, 24/7, emergency department that has been expanded and renovated to feature modern care rooms with care provided by board-certified/board-eligible emergency medicine physicians who are supported by highly-skilled emergency medicine-trained physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and ED technicians. Combined with fast access to sophisticated technology and innovative treatments, at South Hospital, we can save lives when minutes matter most.
Our ED features:
Fast Track:
A new triage area provides assessment upon patient arrival and patients are directed to either our new “fast track” area for treatment of non-life-threatening conditions or to one of our 16 private patient rooms. Once in a room, patients are evaluated by an emergency medicine physician and appropriate treatment begins.
Chest Pain Observation Unit
When someone is experiencing chest pain, it’s important that they seek help quickly to rule out a possible heart attack. By offering chest pain observation services, South Hospital can be there for patients around the clock, ensuring they can get the help they need. Chest pain observation services are available to treat patients 24/7 providing prompt diagnosis and high-quality treatment.
STEMI Network
Through our STEMI network, the emergency department at South Hospital receives electrocardiogram results transmitted wirelessly by regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers when they suspect that a patient is having a STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction) in the field. If a total blockage is suspected, the emergency provider will then activate the cardiac catheterization lab (cath lab) team. When EMS arrives at South Hospital, hospital staff will transport the patient directly to the cath lab, allowing physicians to clear the blockage sooner. It ensures the area’s quickest access to care that can stop a heart attack in progress.
We will facilitate the transfer of any patient to an inpatient hospital facility if further inpatient treatment is required. We also have seamless collaboration with on-call specialty services through our UofL Health and UofL Physicians network of physician specialists.
Cardiac Catheterization Lab
Our cath lab provides our physicians with the clearest look at the arteries that supply the heart muscle. Procedures in the cath labs enable the physician to see how effectively a patient’s circulatory system is functioning. These procedures help diagnose the location and severity of blockages, coronary artery disease, defective heart valves, congenital heart defects and disease of the heart muscle.
Behavioral Health Care Room
We are dedicated to providing expert, compassionate care. A special “no harm” room for the treatment of patients with acute behavioral health conditions in our ED allows us to care for patients in a safe environment.
