Part of that commitment is to provide expanded inpatient services, including our new Intensive Care Unit and the addition of a full-time pulmonologist. Our hospitalists, nurses, and support staff are focused on providing patients with personal, high-quality, compassionate care – all backed by the region’s leading academic health system.
Our hospitalists are dedicated to daily care at the Shelbyville Hospital and work closely with nursing staff and other specialists. Inpatient services are supported by respiratory therapy, diagnostic imaging, registered dieticians, lab, pharmacy, and the renowned Frazier Rehab Institute, providing onsite physical, occupational and speech therapy.

What is a hospitalist?
Hospitalists are doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who specialize in providing care for hospitalized patients.
Most primary care physicians no longer visit patients in the hospital, so they entrust their patient’s care to a hospitalist. Hospitalists also care for patients who do not have a primary care provider. They partner directly with surgeons and other specialists to ensure your general medical needs are met.
Hospitalists work solely in the hospital and do not run a traditional clinical practice. This allows them to be more available to patients and their families throughout their stay in the hospital. Because their specialty is hospital-based care, a hospitalist can stay current with the standards of care in a hospital setting. Hospitalists can focus their ongoing education on the newest trends in-hospital care. This allows them to deliver up-to-date, high-quality care.
